Devon FA Disability County Cup Finals

After success for the Men’s Premier Team in 2022, there was more County Cup joy on Sunday as the Women’s team secured a league and cup double with victory over Pinhoe Ability in the Women’s Devon County Cup Final.

A comfortable win over Pinhoe in the first game was followed by a keenly contested goalless draw against Plymouth Warriors. In the second round of fixtures, Pinhoe were again beaten, with Warriors also being dispatched for a place in the Final. The Grecians completing their fixtures without conceding a goal.

Victory for Pinhoe over the Plymouth Warriors in their group games rewarded them with a place in the final and, after a cagy start, Jess Harper struck to give City the lead. Pinhoe would be reduced to four players after a sin bin offence, but they held strong with a little help from the crossbar and outstanding goalkeeping. The Grecians would seal the trophy moments after the sin bin period concluded, Harper again with the strike to complete an outstanding season for the team.

In the Intermediate group stage, their was disappointment after a strong group stage performance fell just short of a place in the final. Victory over Shamwickshire Rovers was followed by defeat to Club Plymouth Parkway, a win was therefore required to progress to the final in the last qualifying game, but Waldon Athletic secured a draw and advanced on goal difference.

The Men’s League side had more joy, victories over Plymouth Mayflower Specials and Tavistock Specials set up a final against Tiverton Town. After drawing the game level, City would be undone by two goals in the second half as the Yellows completed their fourth win in four and a deserved County Cup victory.

After Title success in the League this season, Exeter City Deaf FC reached the Final in the Premier Level section. A win over Club Plymouth Parkway was followed by a lively contest against Plymouth Warriors, a player from each side dismissed as Warriors edged the game 1-0. Victory for the Grecians over Pinhoe Ability secured a place in the final, but the Warriors were too strong, hitting an unanswered four goals as they eased to the title.

As the season concludes, we are proud to support the brilliance of all our teams and are inspired by the dedication and commitment of the team of volunteer coaches who make the Ability Counts programme at Exeter City such a success. We are already looking forward more progress in 2023/24. Up The City!
