Walking Football Partners

Exeter Strollers

Formed in 2018 at Wonford Sports Centre for the Over 50’s + age group, and for Ladies age 40+, ESWFC has gone from strength to strength, not just in the numbers of players but in forming close friendships and a strong support group especially during the pandemic and when players are injured.

The club has three 6 a side teams in the Devon FA Walking Football League and takes part in Walking Football Association (WFA) tournaments both local and national – at 50 and over, 60 and over, 65 and over, and 70 and over – as well as friendlies against local and visiting sides.  Our female players play as a team and at other times play in mixed teams and competitions.  At present we have players who have represented England, The South, and Devon in games of walking football.

The club’s nights are on a Wednesday from 19.00 – 20.00 hrs at Wonford Sports Centre and on Sundays Cliff Hill Training Ground at Clyst St Mary (the ECFC training ground). This is every Sunday night from 18.00 – 19.00 hrs. The charge is £4 per session to help defray the hire costs as these sessions are held on Astroturf.

In addition, the Strollers hold a practice session on the grass behind the Wonford Sports Centre on Wednesday mornings 11 – 12.30 a.m. and Friday mornings 10.45 – 12.00 noon at King George V Playing Fields, Countess Wear, again, on grass. All these sessions held on grass are FREE to club members.

Exeter City Women Walking Football

Launched by Exeter City Community Trust, in partnership with Exeter City Football Club, the sessions cater for women who want to take up walking football, whether for recreation or competitively.

Walking football, a modified version of the traditional sport, has gained popularity for its emphasis on low-impact, social, and recreational play.

Exeter City’s introduction of dedicated sessions for women marks another step in expanding the accessibility of football within the community.

The club has worked with Gillian Burgess, who has established a number of walking football groups across the county, including the Exeter and District Ladies team, which she established more than two years ago and will now transition across to be part of the Exeter City female football pathway through this partnership.

Walking football is played at a slower pace, with modified rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for participants. It has proven to be an excellent way for individuals to stay active, improve fitness, and foster social connections.

The first session with Exeter City Women’s Walking Football is free.
