Premier League Kicks World Cup

More than 40 youngsters at our Premier League Kicks session at St James School took part in their own World Cup tournament.

And the team of youngsters, all aged between eight and 11, representing the Netherlands claimed the ultimate prize – a replica of the iconic World Cup trophy. The session was also attended by Exeter City first team players, Tom Dean and George Birch, who joined in the fun.

Premier League Kicks are free sessions for young people aged 8-18. They enable participants to get active through a variety of sports and activities that help them progress into pathways such as education, volunteering and qualifications, while also making a positive impact on the local community. Sessions take place weekly at West Exe, St James School and Isca School, with pan-disability sessions at Wonford Sports Centre, attracting up to 30 young people at each.

Laura Evans, Inclusion Lead at Exeter City Community Trust, said: “Premier League Kicks engages young people in positive activities through their passion for football, whilst also addressing topics covering everything from equality and inclusion to youth violence and knife crime. The World Cup has certainly inspired even more young people to get involved and enjoy a fun environment where they can play football and socialise in a safe and supportive setting.

“The sessions give young people access to free football, sport and workshops, providing them with opportunities, support and pathways to achieve their full potential. It sees our staff working closely with young people and authorities in their local area, including Devon & Cornwall Police, to create stronger, safer and more inclusive communities.”

Participants can also work towards a leadership qualification through the Premier League Changemakers programme. Exeter City Community Trust has been delivering Premier League Kicks in the city for nine years – with more than 1,200 young people taking part over that time.
