Ten year old Goalkeeper Kitty had just played two games in the pouring rain. Cold, wet and feeling low on confidence, she broke into tears as the final game finished. However, Kitty’s Mum Rosie knew just who to contact to lift her daughter’s spirit and sent a message to the Exeter City Women’s team.
Hearing of Rosie’s despondency, City Number One Abbi Bond sent a video message to Kitty, talking about her own experiences as a Goalkeeper. One of the hardest positions to play, Abbi was able to offer some insight into her own experiences, good and bad, during her career as a Goalkeeper. After meeting Abbi during a recent visit to the Exwick Hub with her Starcross Dons team, Kitty was instantly lifted by the reply from her idol and keen to attend Sunday’s game after the City Number One had invited her along.
After watching City beat Swindon Town and her favorite goalkeeper keep another clean sheet, Kitty and Abbi were reunited with the City stopper handing her some signed gloves.
Kitty’s Mum Rosie was keen to emphasise the difference the interactions had made. “It’s been a huge boost to talk to someone who knows that pressure. The team were sadly beaten again on Wednesday, but Kitty was buzzing to be a part of it and enjoyed playing. The Exeter City Women’s team are such an inspirational group of Women, we are really grateful to Abbi.”
We look forward to hearing more about Kitty’s football journey in the coming months and years.
